Last fall, Autism Nova Scotia received an extraordinary donation of 76 e-bikes from Carson Exports. These incredible gifts have created opportunities for Autistic individuals to explore their communities, enhance their independence, and engage in active transportation.
After launching an application process, we were thrilled to have the community’s support in providing access to helmets and distributing e-bikes to the selected applicants of the E-Bike Program across Nova Scotia. Cyclesmith was an integral partner, ensuring each e-bike was safely assembled and road-ready. They also provided valuable resources for the families and hosted the HRM E-Bike Pick-Up Event.
For Kyle, one of the e-bike recipients, this gift meant more than just transportation—it was an opportunity. After years of challenges, including struggles with school and mental health, Kyle had begun to isolate himself. But when he learned he would be receiving an e-bike from the program, something shifted. He started researching about the e-bikes, learning road safety, connecting with friends, and planning new adventures.
The day he picked up his bike at Cyclesmith, his excitement was clear. Kyle was pacing, engaging with the staff, and then picked up the e-bike, ready to bring it to the car before the conversation had even ended. For his family, it was a moment of hope.
“I know to some this might not seem like a big deal, but to us, it’s a sign that our son is beginning to see a future again and has hopes and dreams. I cannot thank you enough for bringing some life back into our son. He looks forward to learning how to ride it and to taking on new adventures—which is a big deal, as he hasn’t left the house in 14 months. Words will never be able to express the difference you have made in his life.” - Kyle’s Mother
As the e-bikes continue to be distributed across the province, Autism Nova Scotia looks forward to seeing the impact they will bring by empowering Autistic individuals like Kyle to embrace independence, confidence, and opportunity.
