Celebrating Autism Acceptance Month

Autism Acceptance Month is here! Can you feel the excitement in the air?

April is an especially important month to go above-and-beyond in promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion for everyone. Events will be held through the month dedicated to empowering and uplifting autistic voices, and supporting the programs and services provided by Autism Nova Scotia.

Holly Nauss, a long-time employee of Autism Nova Scotia and the 2025 Walk YOUR Way Ambassador, said the message she wants people to take away from the month is for people to show inclusion, respect and dignity to all.

“Autism Acceptance Month is so important because I love hearing people accept others as they are for having autism,” she said. “I would encourage everyone to accept people on the autism spectrum so everyone can be included as they are.”

Thinking back to past Autism Acceptance Months, the memories that stand out for Holly include flag raising ceremonies and seeing the events and organizations that donated to Autism Nova Scotia. She also enjoyed many World Autism Acceptance Days and Autism Acceptance Month conferences, where she sold jewellery, which took place before the COVID pandemic.

“I love attending the autism flag raising ceremony because it’s really nice to be there every year and I like the flag to be up,” Holly said.

Looking forward to this year’s Autism Acceptance Month, she is excited to hear about a fundraising event at Maverick’s Donuts, a Halifax Wanderers game where a portion of ticket sales will go towards Autism Nova Scotia and attending a flag raising ceremony at Province House on April 2.

“I’m excited because I like hearing about people giving something to a good cause.”

Holly thinks people should support Autism Acceptance Month by following Autism Nova Scotia on social media and finding other ways to support the autistic community. Information and suggestions on the various ways to support Autism Nova Scotia and Autism Acceptance Month can be found on the event page linked below.

“I would like to thank you for supporting Autism Nova Scotia,” Holly said.
